I look forward to shopping at the local farmers markets each season first because it is important to me to know where my food is coming from and how it's produced and second because the quality is so good. The decisions we make everyday about food impact our bodies, our environment, our economy and our community; if you want to change any of those local food systems are the place to start! The UNI Local Food Program/CVRFFN has been a tremendous help with connecting our farm with restaurants, grocers and customers in the cedar valley region. This organization has also given us the opportunity to talk to the community about our farming practices and our concerns with the land that we live on. Eric Jensen, Yellow Table Farm

Local and organic are two different things. “Local” food is produced and processed geographically near its point of sale. “Organic” food is produced following a defined set of standards set by the USDA. By knowing your farmer locally, you have the ability to become familiar with their production practices regardless of the label. What are some other production practices local producers use?
Eat fresh food full of flavor, high in nutrition and with a longer shelf life than those that travel thousands of miles.
Local foods bring new markets and economic opportunities for beginning farmers and food entrepreneurs.
Support biodiversity on our land. Local producers are growing food using sustainable methods such as no till or no chemicals.
Know where your food comes from when you connnet to local farms and thier growing practices.
