UNI Local Food Festival Recap

UNI Local Food Festival A Success!

Under clear blue skies and warm sunshine, the first annual UNI Local Food Festival brought Lawther Field to life with vibrant energy and community spirit. Beginning at 9:30 a.m., students, faculty, staff, and local residents gathered at the heart of campus to explore a bustling pop-up market celebrating the best of regional food and sustainability.

More than 500 attendees enjoyed a delicious array of offerings, including freshly squeezed lemonade, crisp autumn apples, local honey, and farm-fresh produce. The event was a collaborative effort, organized by UNI Dining and the UNI Local Food Program in partnership with the Northern Iowa Student Government (NISG). Twelve local vendors participated, representing a diverse mix of producers, health services, food pantries, and community coalitions—all united by a shared commitment to healthy lifestyles and sustainable food systems.

Guests enjoyed complimentary dishes made with locally sourced ingredients—burgers, pulled pork sliders, and slaw—skillfully prepared and served by UNI Dining, whose support, along with that of NISG and the Green Fund, made the event possible. Among the featured vendors were Grow. Eat. Play. members Engelbrecht Farms, Garden of Life, and Varda Farms and Apiary, each showcasing their passion for nourishing the community.

The UNI Local Food Festival marked a joyful beginning to what promises to be a cherished annual tradition—one that celebrates local flavors, fosters connection, and inspires mindful living.
