Combating Food Insecurity in Iowa

The USDA defines food deserts as anywhere that has 33% of its census traced population living a mile or more from a supermarket or large grocery store. This is the case for many Iowans, living right here in the Cedar Valley. Nutrition assistance programs across the Cedar Valley help to combat poor nutrition and food insecurity. The Northeast Iowa Food Bank has resources available to help you and your family access nutritious food in 16 e. Visit their website here and learn more about food pantries and SNAP/EBT eligibility:https://www.neifb.org/

There are other nutrition assistance programs in the Cedar Valley, many of which can be accessed at your local farmer’s market. Spending money at farmer’s markets helps to keep money in the local economy, and ensures that you are getting quality locally grown fruits and vegetables! There are eight markets located in Black Hawk County. Vendors offer fresh produce, plants, baked goods, jewelry, arts and crafts, honey, soaps, and personal care products – all locally grown or produced. The markets are located throughout the Cedar Valley and are open several days of the week from May-October. Many vendors accept nutrition assistance, which means you can use your SNAP/EBT right at the market.

If you have SNAP/EBT, you are automatically eligible for Double Up Food Bucks. To participate in the Double Up Food Bucks program at a farmers market, simply bring your SNAP/EBT card to College Hill Farmers Market or Waterloo Urban Farmers Market to get started. For every $1 you spend on any fresh fruits and vegetables with your SNAP/EBT card,  you will get $1 in Double Up Food Bucks. Spend your Double Up Food Bucks right away or save for another visit.  DUFB are also redeemable at Fareway and the Greens to Go Mobile Produce Stand.

Cedar Valley Farmers Markets also participate in the Veggie Voucher Program! The Veggie Voucher Program offers individuals receiving services from area organizations funds to be used towards fresh fruits and vegetables at area farmers markets, curbside stands, and more. There are no requirements to receive this assistance, and individuals are able to return for additional vouchers throughout the growing season. Ask your healthcare provider if they distribute Veggie Vouchers!

WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks can also be utilized in our area. Look for signage reading “Farmers Market Nutrition Program Checks Welcome Here” as an indication the vendor is certified to accept FMNP/SFMNP checks or visit the information booth at the market for a full list of participating vendors.

It’s not too late in the season to support our local growers and access the many benefits of shopping at your local farmers market!
